German Shepherd Rescues in South Carolina

Saving homeless dogs from lethal injection is what every canine rescue strives to achieve. In South Carolina, dog rescues working toward this goal with German Shepherds often take abused and sick dogs that no one wants to save. This is true of the breed-specific and all-breed dog rescues discussed below.

1. Carolina German Shepherd Rescue

Carolina German Shepherd Rescue is a 501(c(3) non-profit organization in Leesville. Its mission is to save GSDs from kill shelters and permanently rehome them in loving homes.

The Rescue relies on the services of volunteers, fosters, sponsors, donors, and adopters to realize their dog rescue and rehoming mission.

If you want to adopt a German Shepherd from this Rescue, you need to meet these requirements:

  • Have a fence around your home.
  • Keep the dog indoors as part of the family.
  • Provide a vet reference.
  • Allow a home check.

You will pay between $150 and $500 adoption fees depending on the dog’s age, medical expenses, training, and length of stay at the foster home.

From our research, the Carolina German Shepherd Rescue website does not contain much detail about its mission and adoption process. As such, the best way to get information about the Rescue is via email at [email protected]

You can also post mail to Leesville, SC, United States, 29070, or check recent posts about rescued GSD on their Facebook page.

2. New Beginnings Shepherd Rescue

New Beginnings Shepherd Rescue is a breed-specific rescue started in 2004. Its headquarters are at Holy Hill, South Carolina. The founder, who had a German Shepherd as a service dog, started the Rescue to ‘give back to the breed.’

As the name suggests, the Rescue’s main mission is to save German Shepherd dogs from kill shelters and give them a new beginning in a loving forever home.

New Beginnings relies on the generosity of fosters, volunteers, donors, and adopters to bring new hope to homeless German Shepherds.

If you are planning to give a new beginning to a German Shepherd at the Rescue, the adoption process entails the following:

  • Completing and submitting an adoption application.
  • Meeting the set requirement for adoption approval.
  • Signing an adoption contract.

You have to be 18 years or older to adopt from New Beginnings Rescue. The adoption fee is higher for younger dogs and less for seniors and can vary from $175 to $425.

While you won’t find much about the adoption process on the New Beginnings Rescue’s website, you can email [email protected] to request more info. You can also post mail to PO Box 1671, Holly Hill, South Carolina, 29059, or follow news about their latest rescues on Facebook.

3. Hollow Creek Farm Equine & Canine Rescue

If you have the heart to adopt a German Shepherd that has been abused, exploited, or neglected, then the Hollow Creek Farm in Sharon, South Carolina, is the place to go.

The charitable organization started in 1999 and has rescued, rehabilitated, and adopted thousands of dogs and other animals.

The Rescue also offers training, vet services, and community education on animal welfare topics such as:

  • The harms of overbreeding.
  • The negative toll of animal abuse.
  • Responsible pet ownership.
  • Unrealistic human expectations of animals.
  • Curbing animal abuse and reporting cases.

Like most 105(c)(3) organizations, Hollow Creek Rescue relies on donations and volunteer services to cater to the welfare of the animals.

You can also help through donations, applying to be a volunteer, or adopting a dog. Adopting a German Shepherd follows the same steps as adopting any dog.

The steps require you to:

  1. Download, complete, and email the adoption application form to [email protected].
  2. Wait for an email response to your adoption application. This comes after a thorough review of your application.
  3. Once approved, work with an assigned volunteer to schedule a visit to the farm to meet your prospective pet.
  4. Bring home your adopted dog.

The adoption fees can vary between $200 and $300 depending on size and the dog’s medical needs.

You can visit the Hollow Creek Rescue website for additional information about available German Shepherds for adoption. You can also request more info on other queries using the email address indicated earlier or follow the Rescue’s activities on Facebook

4. Homeward Bound Pet Rescue

Homeward Bound Pet Rescue is a charitable dog rescue in South Carolina that serves the Columbia-Irmo area.

The no-kill Rescue focuses on saving dogs from shelters before they are put to sleep. However, the Rescue also welcomes dogs from owners who, for varied reasons, can no longer ensure the pet’s overall welfare.

Homeward Bound was founded by volunteers. The Rescue continues to rely on volunteers’ services to save, care for, and rehome dogs in need. In addition, the all-breed dog rescue works with local vets and foster parents to provide comprehensive dog welfare.

As part of its mission, Homeward Bound incorporates community education on issues related to curbing pet overpopulation through spaying and neutering.

Dog lovers who want to provide a forever loving home to a dog from Homeward Bound can be part of the mission by following this adoption process:

  1. Head to the Rescue’s ‘Adopt’ page and browse the available dogs.
  2. Download the adoption application in MS Word or PDF formats.
  3. Fill out the application form and send it to the Rescue by email ([email protected]) or fax (803-454-9094). The fax number is the same for direct calls.
  4. Allow the volunteers 24-48 hours to review your application and get back to you.

The rest of the adoption process follows after that. You’ll need to pay a $200 adoption contribution if your application is approved.

Volunteers at the Rescue can propose a different dog from the one you identified if they think you are a better match for a different pet.

You can seek more info about adoptable German Shepherds at the Homeward Bound Rescue by visiting their website. You can also use the earlier specified phone and email contacts for direct inquiries.

German Shepherd Dog Clubs in South Carolina

North Carolina does not have many breed-specific German Shepherd rescues. So, to increase your chances of finding an adoptable German Shepherd, consider becoming a member of a German Shepherd club.

The German Shepherd Dog Club of Charleston is a good place to start connecting with other GSD owners and enthusiasts. Apart from having fun during show days or educational events on the breed, you might find info about the best GSD rescue in the state.
