German Shepherd Rescues In Colorado

Colorado is a dog-loving state where abandoned and at-risk Germans Shepherds can find rescue. From Denver to Fort Morgan and Littleton, these three German Shepherd rescues stand out.

1. Front Range German Shepherd Rescue

Front Range is a small German Shepherd Rescue situated in Denver, Colorado. The Rescue is run by volunteers with a heart for saving homeless GSDs and finding new loving families for them.

German Shepherds arrive at Front Range Rescue from animal shelters across Colorado. Others are surrendered to the Rescue by owners who can no longer keep their dogs for varied reasons. Some reasons include moving out of the area or a lifestyle change. You can discover why your preferred German Shepherd is in the Rescue on the ‘Available Dogs’ page.

Front Range Rescue welcomes any volunteer willing to lend a hand. There are different ways you can help the Rescue:

  • Become a foster. The process starts with filling out a foster form.
  • Walk dogs in boarding facilities.
  • Provide transportation to vet appointments.
  • Assess the homes of potential adopters.
  • Make a monetary donation.
  • Adopt a dog.

The adoption process at Front Range is quite demanding.

German Shepherd lovers who wish to adopt a dog from Front Range Rescue should meet certain conditions and provide specific details.

Here’s an overview of these requirements.

  • The adoption process commences when you fill out the application form. All items on the form must be completed for it to be processed.
  • You must provide the name of your veterinarian or at least one you previously worked with.
  • You are required to provide references who will be contacted by phone.
  • You should respond to any additional questions sent to you via email, even after you’ve completed an application form.

Volunteers at Front Range Rescue have an answer for potential adopters in 2-4 weeks. A meeting with the dog and the eventual adoption will follow after that.

Note that the Rescue does not offer the “Foster to Adopt” option.

2. German Shepherd Rescue of the Rockies / All Mixed Up Dog Rescue (AMU).

The German Shepherd Rescue of the Rockies has a special story.

The Rescue was started by a German Shepherd dog lover, Katie, in 2011. The founder noticed how many GSDs were homeless or stuck in shelters and decided to work with other volunteers to find new forever homes for the dogs.

Unable to manage the large-sized German Shepherds for health reasons, the founder has recently worked with other volunteers to merge German Shepherd Rescue of the Rockies with a new All Mixed Up Dog Rescue.

The new Rescue welcomes both German Shepherds and other small-sized dog mixes usually disregarded by potential adopters.

Following the merger of the two Rescues, German Shepherds available for adoption, and the adoption and foster applications, are on the All Mixed Up Dog Rescue website.

You can be part of GSROR’s noble cause of saving German Shepherds by donating funds, becoming a foster or volunteer, or adopting a dog.

You must be 25 years and above and a resident of Colorado to adopt from the GSROR. The adoption fee is $350, which can vary for senior dogs.

To determine if you qualify for the adoption, volunteers at the Rescue will contact your landlord, veterinarian, and the references you provide. The contact details for these persons are included in the adoption application. Potential adopters should not have children less than 6 years old.

Interested adopters complete the adoption application after identifying a good match from the available dogs. The adopter then gets to spend time with the dog at a scheduled meet-and-greet.

This meeting is attended by all family members, including existing dogs and pets. After the meeting, you can bring home your dog if everything points to you being a good match.

3. Snow Capped Shepherd Rescue

Snow Capped Shepherd Rescue is a specialized rescue for White German Shepherd purebreds. However, the Rescue also takes in German Shepherd mixes

Volunteers at the Rescue strive to save stray, abandoned, and abused white German Shepherds by placing them in foster families. Being in a foster home is a transition towards the dogs’ new forever-loving families.

In the Rescue’s view, many dogs end up in shelters because most owners do not take responsibility for neutering or spaying their pets. As such, Snow Capped Rescue advocates for neutering or spaying as the primary way to eradicate dog shelters and rescues.

If you are a White German Shepherd supporter, there are several ways you can help the Rescue:

  • Become a foster or volunteer.
  • Buy from the Rescue’s shop.
  • Donate money or dog supplies.
  • Spread the word.
  • Adopt a dog.

At the Snow Capped Rescue, you have to fill out an application form online to express your interest in adopting. Adopters can also send the form by mail or email.

Consequently, the Rescue conducts a thorough interview to ensure the adopter is matched with the right dog. If the interview determines you are a good match, the Rescue organizes a meeting with the dog.

A home visit follows if the meeting goes well.

If the adoption is granted, a volunteer will specify any conditions you need to meet before you can bring home your dog. These conditions could include repairing fences, acquiring certain dog supplies, and paying a $250 adoption fee.
